The Play Therapy Primer: In Integration of Theories and Techniques by Kevin John O'Connor,

The Play Therapy Primer: In Integration of Theories and Techniques by Kevin John O'Connor,
Play is the most popular therapy approach for helping children work through emotionally distressing experiences or overcome behavioral and developmental problems. As children-young ones especially-are unable to think through and discuss their problems cogently, play therapists seek to maximize a childs ability to engage in behavior that is fun, person-oriented, non-instrumental, and characterized by a natural flow. Working within a given theoretical model, they use the therapeutic powers of play to help a child move systematically toward mental health. Offering a variety of tested theories and techniques and including new approaches to play therapy since the first edition, The Play Therapy Primer, Second Edition provides health care professionals with a thorough introduction to using play in therapy. This revised volume features increased coverage of developmental issues and includes a new chapter on diversity issues as well as one that presents comprehensive case examples, including session-by-session treatment plans. This edition provides a broad context for understanding and practicing play therapy. The introductory chapters present a history of the evolution of play therapy, establish a common vocabulary, and delineate the functions of play behavior in human life. The most widely used models of play therapy-psychoanalytic, humanistic, and behavioral-are reviewed, as well as several other theoretical models of psychotherapy used to develop the integrated model known as Ecosystemic Play Therapy. In addition, material is presented on the importance of cultural awareness, knowledge, and skills in the effective practice of play therapy in the twenty-first century. The Play TherapyPrimer offers a conceptual framework for the practice of individual play therapy. Ecosystemic Play Therapy-a model inclusive enough to serve both new and experienced therapists-is examined, along with the basic assumptions underlying the model.

The Genesis of Animal Play by Gordon M. Burghardt,
The Genesis of Animal Play by Gordon M. Burghardt,
In "The Genesis of Animal Play, Gordon Burghardt examines the origins and evolution of play in humans and animals. He asks what play might mean in our understanding of evolution, the brain, behavioral organization, and psychology. Is play essential to development? Is it the driving force behind human and animal behavior? What is the proper place for the study of play within the cognitive, neural, and behavioral sciences? The engaging nature of play--who does not enjoy watching a kitten attack a ball of yarn?--has made it difficult to study. Some scholars have called play an unquantifiable mystery; others have eclared that it doesn't really exist. Using the comparative perspectives of ethology and psychology, "The Genesis of Animal Play goes further than other studies in reviewing the evidence of play throughout the animal kingdom, from human babies to animals not usually considered playful. Burghardt finds that although playfulness may indeed have been the driving force behind what we consider distinctive in human (and mammalian) behavior, it could only develop through a specific set of biological conditions that led to a unique interaction of developmental, phylogenic, ecological, and physiological processes.Part I offers a detailed discussion of play in placental mammals (including children) and develops an integrative framework called surplus resource theory. The heart of the book, however, and perhaps the most controversial section, lies in the seven chapters in part II in which Burghardt presents evidence of playfulness in such unexpected groups of animals as marsupials, birds, reptiles, and "Fish That Leap, Juggle, and Tease." Burghardt concludes by considering the implications ofthe diversity of play for future research, and suggests that understanding the origin and development of play can shape our view of society and its accomplishments through history.
